For a small, tiny town in the middle of the country, the search for ways to save a little cash on the little blue pills that make up so many of the country’s hottest drinks is a challenge. In this case, the answer is the same for America.
With a record-breaking $1.8 billion loss in its first three months in Congress, the pharmaceutical giant is facing mounting competition from other drug companies and has to fight to survive with sales of Viagra coming off patent. While Viagra remains one of America’s top-selling medications, there are other drugs to fight off. Not only are they good for the brain but they also help the brain relax, making them ideal for boosting alertness and memory in men with Alzheimer’s disease.
“I think the biggest challenge of all is for people with Parkinson’s disease to find ways to be more informed and to be more proactive about where they are going,” says Jason Smith, an Alzheimer’s drug sales representative at Lilly.
With sales of Viagra coming off patent, the new drug will be the first drug to treat what ails Parkinson’s disease. The company is planning to take Viagra off the market soon, but Smith says Lilly is still weighing a new competitor that could reduce the amount of Viagra lost. “If we can have Viagra on the market quickly, then we will be able to do that,” Smith says.
Smith estimates Lilly’s sales of Viagra will rise to $2.5 billion in the next decade, while Lilly’s Viagra is already on the market, and sales will be on the rise.
Although Viagra is still a popular choice for many, the market for its generic version is shrinking. Sales of generic versions have fallen, while prices for brand-name drugs have gone down.
The biggest challenge, Smith says, is getting the drug from outside the U. S., but Lilly is working on new ways to make it available to the U. S. market. The company is currently looking to get to the stage where it can make it available to U. markets by the end of the year. If it does, sales could be in the hundreds of millions of dollars.
“I don’t see the whole story going on here,” says Smith. “I think this is a very complex issue that will be dealt with in a very, very short amount of time.”
The challenge is not just about finding a new way to save money on Viagra but about finding ways to help the American people afford the drugs.
A number of the drugs that are on the market, including Alzheimer’s drugs such as Cialis and Levitra, are made in countries such as China and India. Smith says Lilly is hoping to make Viagra available to U. markets by the end of this year, but he thinks that may be too soon.
“Right now, it’s not going to be as easy as I thought it would be,” Smith says. “This is going to take time to get the market and it will depend on how many people are going to be affected.”
Smith says he doesn’t know how Lilly will respond to the challenges facing the country’s aging population. “I don’t know what will happen in the next six to eight years,” he says. “I don’t know how long we’ll be able to do this.”
Smith says he thinks Lilly’s efforts may be successful in the United States but it will take time before he gets started on how to do it. “I’m not sure that this is going to be easy,” he says. “This is going to take time to get the market and it will depend on how many people are affected.”
Smith says he plans to make a decision by the end of the year. “I just have no idea how it’ll work. I don’t know how I will have to pay for this,” he says. “I just hope this does not turn into another big hit in the next six to eight years.”
A Lilly spokeswoman declined to comment on the company’s plans with a spokesman. But Smith says he is confident Lilly can succeed with a new drug that is likely to be of high value.
